Copyrighted Religion!

You might have participated in some kind of religious ceremony with bhajans & kirtans being sung on some popular film music. Its not a parody but some sincere words as prayer to the Almighty. The advantage of it is that most of the people assembled there can recognize the popular album’s music and can sing together.

But I always avoid to participate in such gatherings because whenever any religious bhajan is played on a popular filmy music, my mind is diverted to that album or original song from the religious theme or atmosphere. And secondly it seems to be inferior or cheap act as it is a copy and lack originality. But I have never registered my protest against it as it seemed to me that many others pretend to benefit from it.

But here is an interesting news going around these days. A Delhi based Art Gallery viz. Sriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra had sued International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) for Rupees Two Lakhs compensation for staging a Ram Leela, the traditional play on the life of Hindu Lord Ram, based on its script! The script of the play was specially written for the shows at the Kala Kendra and was a unique artistic creation & the ISKCON had hired some artistes, who had been sacked by the Kala Kendra, to stage the play, said the petition. The Delhi High Court in its decision this Monday imposed a fine of Rs.50,000 on the ISKCON for copyright violation.

But I think this copyright was not vioated for any commercial use. Is religious or public cause or issue too vulnerable to coprights? Interestingly the court directed the Kala Kendra to donate the amount of the fine in two weeks to the Delhi government, as prayed by both parties, towards mid-day meal expenditure in schools.

What do you think about this?

  1. Well, the word “inspired” is a sort of euphemism to hide the crime of copying and it should not be ignored by the law. Only if Hollywood directors or scriptwriters could pay enough attention to acquire their turf back…

  3. lol…oh how I wish I lived in Indian. Never heard of a country with so much drama!! Its funny how we oppose stealing scripts yet our directors can be “Inspired” by Hollywood movies all year around. Why are all Indian laws there for convenience???

  7. I agree to you Ashok that crime can not be ignored irrespective of its motives. But I would like to add to that that crime committed for good is not a crime at all. …And Ram Leela is already a copyright of the Hindu religion. If someone has done any modifications to it, it can’t be a new copyright but an attempt to tarnish or spoil the Original. So infact to play with the Original script is also a crime. If you are a creative genius then come out with something which is absolutely your own and get it copyrighted. But playing with the script in public domain which belongs to a particular religion might amount to a crime in my opinion.

  9. Crime can not be ignored if it is done for non commercial motive. Moreover there are many other motives other than commercial, which are cause of crimes.
