Airconditioned Lounge for General Rail Passengers
Posted on April 26th, 2007 at 1:53 pm by Ashutosh

The day before, I had some spare time at Kathgodam Railway Station while waiting for my return train to Dehradun. So I decided to take a stroll to the other end of the platform just to see how a rail-head looks like at the end (Katgodam being the last destination for railway line). After watching all the four tracks ending in a wall with cushioning for the coach-links and thus pacifying my curiousity (as I had never seen this anywhere before), I turned back towards the rail canteen. Here I saw an airconditioned lounge nearby with a strange sign reading “Arrival & Departure Transit Lounge”. Strange because Kathgodam being the last point for the railways, this station is never used for any transit (Read the rest of this story.)

Free Internet in India
Posted on April 26th, 2007 at 5:34 am by Ashutosh

I was highly delighted when Economic Times greeted me today morning with its first headline as

Broadband may come free in two years

It further said “The government proposes to offer all citizens of India free, high-speed broadband connectivity by 2009, through the state-owned telecom service providers BSNL and MTNL.”

National Plastic Policy
Posted on April 13th, 2007 at 5:44 am by Ashutosh

Plastic has offered never before convenience and options to the mankind. But on the other hand, it is a major culprit in choking of city drainage system, making our food stuff unhygienic and even causing death of cattle & dogs by making its way into their throat with their food. It has also influenced the culture & social habits. What I hate the most about it is plastic bags & packaging has stolen the beauty of the nature. When I go tracking in the Himalayas, I find plastic scattered everywhere even in the remotest & hard to access places. This is very painful to my eyes. No matter how far you go, wherever you go, you can’t escape its ugly sights!

So you can understand why I was feeling a bit relieved while reading an alarming headline in today’s Economic Times which read : “Blame it on plastic ban, 4,000 to lose job“. This is a news story from Gujarat. (Read the rest of this story.)

Zee-Turner was wrong & Tata Sky was right!
Posted on April 7th, 2007 at 3:11 am by Ashutosh

Recently in a landmark decision TDSAT (The Telecom Dispute Settlement and Appellate Tribunal) ordered Zee - Turner to share 19 channels with Tata Sky at 50 percent of the declared cable rates. Earlier Zee- Turner had asked Tata Sky to carry all its 32 channels at Rs149.85 per subscriber per month. But Tata Sky wanted to carry only 19 of Zee- Turner’s channels to its subscribers. So it didn’t want to pay for the channels it didn’t want to telecast.

The point here is whether seller decides the price of a product or the purchaser? (Read the rest of this story.)
