Fast Facts :
- A standard Computer (including monitor) contributes over half a ton of Carbon-di-oxide into our atmosphere every year.
- This means Carbon emissions by a small office with about 15 PCs is equivalent to that of a mid-sized car!
- Carbon credits are currently being traded @ 15 Euros per ton of CO2 in the international market.
- An average PC consumes 600 units of electricity annually. Out of these, over 400 units are wasted by running the PC at full power even when its not in use!
- A decade back PCs used to work on a 100W SMPS but now they come loaded with 400W to 450W SMPS implying that they now consume over 4 times power to support ever increasing transistor chips on CPUs.
- In large Organisations, almost 60% of PCs are never shut down irrespective of working hours, holidays or the requirement …merely because employees don’t care for trivial issues.
[ Last week during my stay at IYH-New Delhi, when I complaint to my room-mate that he always forgot to put-off the A.C. before locking up the room, he replied that he preferred the room to be pre-heated whenever he entered back!!! Guess the amount of power wasted for 8-10 hours every day just to avoid a slight discomfort! We must forego such little luxuries in favour of larger cause.]
- 80% of PC users disable their individual power conservation settings within 90 days of purchase and they never reverse it!
What to do? :
- Enable power saver settings of your PC.
- Putting a PC in sleep or hibernate mode during inactive times can cut energy use from 60% to upto 90%.
- Switching from an old CRT monitor to the new age sleeky LCD-TFT display also cuts power consumption by upto 70%.
- Instruct your family members at home and your colleagues & subordinated at your office to power-off your monitors whenever they notice that you have stepped-out leaving your monitor on.
- Use SMPS based solar-invertors with zero load factor for your power back-ups.
What will I get? :
- All the above steps will cut down your power-bills substantially.
- Switching to TFT display is slightly expensive but its trendy & stylish and is good for your eyes, saves on your table space and is also Vaastu-friendly i.e. its slim & light looks springs up alacrity & activeness compared to the sluggish feelings brought by the old & heavy CRTs. Moreover it also saves 70% on power
- Solar Panels demand a heavy one time investment but given its long life and almost zero maintenance are cost-effective in the long run, especially in commercial premises where power rates are at their peaks.
- Putting aside all financial calculations, you will experience that rare & deep feeling of satisfaction for doing your bit to save and conserve your environment..
- If you have come this far, reading this post completely and still thinking then you have wasted your time & energy as well as your PC’s power. Kindly put your computer to sleep.
