Not just dot com bust but a total Internet crash might be in the offing! Thus says the Ministerial Background Report by none other than the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Decelopment (OECD), London. It predicts that Internet will crash by 2011!
Why will Internet crash ?
* OECD predicts an acute shortage of IP addresses by 2011
* Explosive growth in new Internet connections is leading to consumption of more & more IP addresses.
* 85 percentage of the possible IP addresses had been already allocated by early this year.
* Remainig 16 percentage of IP addresses are expected to be finished in exactly three years from now.
What needs to be done?
* Freeway passages of the IP addresses should be restricted.
* Rationing and priority distribution of the IP addresses could be the order of the day.
* These measures could only lead to its judicious use under the controlled allocation. Therfore other technical aspects should be explored for widespread accessibility of the Internet.
What alternatives are available?
* Switch on to IPv6 capable networks.
* While IPv4 will run out of addresses by 2011, IPv6 has almost infinite number of addresses. So it seems deployment of IPv6 is the only solution available.
What are the problems?
* Everyone will have to start moving to IPv6 capable networks.
* Over 60 million mobile users too need to be shifted onto the updated version.
* All broadband users will be required to be shifted too.
So any relief in sight?
* Most likely IPv4 & IPv6 will work simultaneously.
* So Internet will not actually crash even after 2011. Much ado about nothing
.
So technically there will be no crash, no bust. World will go on (to be caught under the net
).
