On Nov. 5 at 2 p.m., the Century College Theater put on a Sunday matinee performance of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” as adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher, in the Century College Auditorium. The audience was full of students, staff, and community members. The lighting was dark, red, and purple strobe lights were used during transformation scenes which added a creepy and abstract feel to the play. The lack of sound helped build tension especially during scenes like during Act II when one of the female Hyde’s screamed. The audience literally jumped out of their seats, including myself. The use of multiple Hyde’s gave the whole play a very different feel from what one would expect of such iconic story. It made the play a more modern in that is felt more like a case of multiple personalities rather than your average good versus evil storyline that we are used to.

Director Paul Aberasturi says in his production notes, which are in the playbill, “In each of these four sides of Mr. Hyde, we can see different passions of the unacceptable (the angry, the violent, the manipulator, and the vengeful). However, we are also presented with a part of Hyde who is (to a degree) romantic and caring…” This part of Hyde, charismatically portrayed by Century College student Murray Parent, was a nice surprise and made the play even more

But this review would not be complete without mentioning the compelling performance of Jon Stentz who played Dr. Jekyll.

Stentz, who is also making his debut performance here at Century, gave a gripping and inspiring portrayal of Dr. Jekyll. From his movements, his voice, and even the way that he stood, you couldn’t take your eyes off him. He commanded the stage in a truly remarkable performance.

I hope to see more of him at the Century College Theater in the future.

Were you inspired by this performance as well and want to see more? How about trying out for future productions? There will be upcoming auditions for more productions here at Century College soon.
