It is not uncommon for students to struggle with writing. Writing can be difficult at the best of times, and even more so when you are juggling multiple classes at once. There is one helpful resource here at Century College that not every student knows about: the Writing Center. The Writing Center can help you improve your skills and get you unstuck when you are in a tricky place with your assignment. I interviewed the Writing Center Coordinator, David Lüth King, to get a better idea of how helpful the Writing Center can be.
MW: How can the Writing Center help students?
DLK: Our purpose is to help students develop writing skills. We read what students have written and give them feedback on how to improve it.
MW: Why should students go to the Writing Center?
DLK: Because it’s free and it can help you write better no matter what your skill level of writing is! We also have potted plants, which is another reason to come in.
MW: Finally, what do you want students to know about writing in general? Do you have any words of encouragement for those struggling with writing?
DLK: I hear a lot of students say “I’m not good at writing” and then I read what they have and it’s better than they think it is. Writing isn’t something that people either are or aren’t good at. It’s a skill and like any skill, you can get better at it. A lot of students have anxiety around writing. Part of what we do in the writing center is not just help people develop skills, but also reduce stress and anxiety around writing.
The Writing Center is an excellent resource to help you get your writing into shape. Take advantage of the Center and come in for help on any of your written assignments from any of your classes.
