About the Century College Concert Band
The Century College Concert Band is a 50-member ensemble, directed by the passionate and talented Charles Preis, promises an evening of dynamic performances featuring music spanning the Baroque to Contemporary periods. This a unique hybrid of students, alumni, and community members. Founded by the legendary composer John Zdechlik in 1985, the band evolved from a traditional college ensemble into a community-based treasure. Today, it continues to inspire audiences and musicians alike, providing a space for artists of all ages and backgrounds to connect through the universal language of music.
What to Expect
This year’s Fall Concert will highlight a carefully curated repertoire featuring 10 composers, each showcasing a blend of timeless classics and contemporary pieces. Expect an exciting mix of music that reflects global influences, including beloved marches, and movie soundtrack highlights. With its vibrant acoustics, the historic St. Mark’s Lutheran Church provides an ideal venue for this musical journey.
Director Charles Preis
Director Charles Preis, a dedicated leader since 1997, describes the Concert Band as a living testament to the power of community. “I hope the audience not only hears the music but also feels the camaraderie that exists within the band and our community,” says Preis. His love for music and commitment to fostering a welcoming environment have helped the ensemble flourish, even through challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic.

Century Chamber Orchestra Fall Concert
The Century Chamber Orchestra has been a vital part of the community for decades, blending the talents of Century College students and local musicians. With 25 members playing strings, woodwinds, horns, and percussion, the orchestra offers a diverse and vibrant sound. Some members have been part of the orchestra for over 30 years, making it a multi-generational ensemble rooted in tradition and excellence.
This free concert, directed by the talented Dr. Colleen White, promises to be an unforgettable celebration of orchestral music and community spirit. Under Dr. White’s baton, the orchestra performs a wide range of music, showcasing contemporary composers, women, and Latinx artists. Dr. White’s approach incorporates solos, ensembles, and challenging pieces that push musicians to grow both technically and artistically.
Meet the Director: Dr. Colleen White
Dr. White, who joined the orchestra in 2023, brings a wealth of experience as a clarinetist, educator, and conductor. With a Doctorate in Music from the University of Oregon and years of teaching and performing, her dynamic leadership has energized the orchestra. Known for her collaborative and empathetic style, Dr. White creates an environment where musicians can thrive and audiences can experience the transformative power of music.
